Why is this program needed?
Harm reduction programs are important public health strategies that aim to reduce the negative consequences associated with substance use, particularly injection substance use. These programs are based on the recognition that substance use disorder is a complex social and public health issue that requires a multifaceted approach, which includes not only prevention and treatment, but also harm reduction. Harm reduction allows treatment providers and healthcare workers to build relationships with users to create environments that harbor respect without creating stigma. It aims to reduce the harms associated with substance use without necessarily requiring users to stop using.
The needle exchange portion of the One2One program allows injection users to safely dispose of their used needles and syringes and replace them with clean tools. This decreases the risk of transmitting blood-borne infections such as HIV and hepatitis C. While also decreasing the need to use tools given by others in the event of limited resources.
