Provigil is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant and wakefulness-promoting agent. Its active ingredient is Modafinil. This medication is primarily used to treat narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift work sleep disorder.

Its dosage form is oral tablets, available as Provigil 100mg and Provigil 200mg.

How Does Provigil Work?

Modafinil’s exact mechanism of action is unclear. However, many believe it affects the brain chemicals responsible for sleep and wakefulness.

It’s important to note that this medication doesn’t treat the underlying disorder. It only makes patients feel more awake. Also, Provigil doesn’t replace other treatments for narcolepsy or OSA. You should continue these while taking Provigil.

How to Take Provigil

You must take Modafinil exactly as your healthcare provider has directed. Read all medication guides, instruction sheets, and other materials provided to you. Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

Provigil is typically taken once daily. If you have daytime sleepiness due to narcolepsy or OSA, take it in the morning when you wake up. To treat work-time sleep disorders, take Provigil one hour before your work shift.

You can take the tablet with or without food. You’ll typically take Provigil for up to 12 weeks. Please consult your caregiver if you experience excessive sleepiness that persists even while taking this medication.

Warning! Taking Provigil does not substitute for getting sufficient sleep. The drug may be habit-forming. Do not share it with another person, particularly someone with a history of addiction or drug abuse.

Provigil Dosage

  • Typical adult Provigil dose for Narcolepsy: 200mg orally in the morning—daily.
  • The usual adult dose for OSA is Provigil 200mg orally daily in the morning.
  • Typical adult dose for Shift Work Sleep Disorder: Provigil 200mg orally every day, an hour before starting work shift.

Taking Provigil for OSA

If you’re taking Provigil for sleepiness caused by OSA (obstructive sleep apnea), you may as well use a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine. Your doctor will decide if you need both treatments. Do not stop using your CPAP machine while sleeping unless the physician says so.

Missed Dose & Overdose

Skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine the next day to compensate for the missed dose. You should skip Provigil if you remember your dose, but it’s almost bedtime, or you don’t plan to be awake for several hours.

In case of an overdose, please seek emergency medical attention.
