Tremont City Barrel Fill

Background

The Tremont City Barrel Fill Site is a closed industrial waste landfill in German Township, Clark County, Ohio, about 1.5 miles west of Tremont City and about 3.5 miles northwest of Springfield. The site covers a 8.5 acres on the northwest corner of a larger, 80-acre property that also includes the Tremont City Landfill and the Tremont City Waste Transfer Facility. From 1976 to 1979, about 51,500 drums and about 300,000 gallons of industrial liquid waste were disposed of in waste cells. All disposal operations at the site stopped in 1980 and a soil cover of three to four feet was placed over the area. Soil was added in subsequent years and now the cover over the waste cells ranges from 10 to 17 feet deep.
