Mercury is a naturally occurring metal that comes in liquid or gas form. It can be found in many household items such as thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, old thermostats, toys and barometers. When mercury-containing items break, mercury is released into the air; the results may cause short- and long-term health effects.
The Clark County Waste Management District sponsors a mercury thermometer exchange program at the Health District, providing funding for recycling of bulk mercury and mercury-containing devices. Since its inception, the mercury exchange program in Clark County has collected and recycled over 480 pounds of mercury.
The Health District or the Ohio EPA responds to all reported mercury spills in Clark County, assisting in assessment and cleanup. To report a spill, please call 390-5600.
The Health District also assists with mercury collection at community cleanup events.
If you have any concerns regarding mercury, please contact the Health District at 937-390-5600 or by emailing health@ccchd.com.
